The purpose of the Dag Hammarskjöld’s Backåkra Foundation is for Backåkra to function as a museum in honour of the life and work of Dag Hammarskjöld. Backåkra should also be a meeting place to promote  research and work in areas of interest to Dag Hammarskjöld.

The Museum will host parts of Dag Hammarskjöld´s art collection and many gifts which he received as Secretary-General of the United Nations. Many gifts are from countries grateful for Dag Hammarskjöld's work. His private study will be recreated.

When the Museum is open, it will host exhibitions and programmes. Parts of the exhibits will rotate during the year.
The Museum will include a shop and café. It is scheduled to open in April 2018.
